WELCOME ADDRESS - SCHAVAN

Successful research is internationally oriented in today’s networked world. Major scientific tasks can only be solved through international cooperation between researchers. This networked research is not only particularly effective, it also produces faster results especially in the context of infectious diseases that are spreading throughout the world or are particularly common in certain countries.

Immunology is not only very important in connection with familiar and new infectious diseases but also with regard to a wide range of clinical syndromes. These include endemic diseases such as diabetes or cancer. Furthermore, immunological research is also essential for our understanding and treatment of many rare diseases. A comprehensive insight into the immune system is decisive for the development of new drugs. This is why the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been funding research into infectious diseases and immune reactions as a research priority for several years now.

“Immunity for Life – Immunology for Health” – the motto of this year’s Congress of the European Federation of Immunological Societies has been wellchosen. Health research is always research for the well-being of patients. The Congress will encourage cooperation between international experts and cover a wide variety of topics, ranging from basic research to clinical research, in more than 30 symposiums and 60 workshops. At the same time, the Congress will provide a forum for both established scientists and young researchers. The whole field of research will profit from this meeting. Complex disciplines like immunology need well-trained, specialized young talent. I am delighted therefore that the Congress will also be honouring exceptional work performed by young researchers.

Congresses like this provide an excellent platform for exchanging ideas, discussing experiments and processing findings for the benefit of all patients. I wish this event every success and I wish all those taking part stimulating discussions and an intensive exchange of ideas.

Prof. Dr. Annette Schavan,
MdB Federal Minister of Education and Research
